I am a hardworking and caring Healthcare Assistant with over seven years of experience in delivering quality care to patients. I am currently employed with Caremark Dublin South where my duties involve attending to the patients' needs and helping them with basic tasks to keep them comfortable and respected. The reason I have chosen the Master of Science in Digital Marketing & Analytics offered at Dublin Business School is the need to complement my professional practice in direct healthcare provision and learn how digital solutions can be applied within the healthcare industry.
From my multiple years working in the healthcare field, I have observed the need for increased adoption of technology in the delivery of healthcare, communication, and services. Thus, my focus on digital marketing and analytics will help to contribute to the future of healthcare, especially in the areas of patient engagement, online health resources, and data-driven decisions. I would like to build on these skills to advance solutions in the health sector and seek positions that offer me an opportunity to merge my past caregiving experience with digital knowledge to enhance the quality of patient care.
I have worked as a Healthcare Assistant for over seven years and have had the opportunity to work in different areas of the healthcare sector. My first nursing job was at G H Vandanam Hospital in India where I was helping the patients with bathing, feeding, and mobility exercises. In this fast-paced environment, I collaborated with various multidisciplinary teams and thus was able to enhance my communication and teamwork skills. I also learned how to handle medical equipment and how to ensure that patients are safe, which allowed me to juggle various tasks and work effectively in stressful conditions.
After this, I joined Swasraya Vocational Training Centre for Differently Abled, where I was helping people with physical and mental challenges. This position entailed providing physical and emotional care to patients, which allowed me to build meaningful interactions with them. I accompanied patients and met their specific requirements; thus, enhancing my people skills. The emotional and psychological aspects of care emerged as critical components of the practice. I engaged in training to ensure I was updated with the current practices in the field which in turn helped me deliver the best care possible.
At the moment, I work at Caremark Dublin South, where I help individuals with tasks, personal care, and respect for their privacy. I have gained organizational skills in this role because I work with time and ensure that I follow the health and safety measures. Through my interaction with patients, families, and other healthcare professionals, I have developed good communication and teamwork skills.
In addition to my vocational experience, I am currently studying for a Master of Science in Digital Marketing & Analytics at Dublin Business School. This course is relevant to my career goal of incorporating technology into the delivery of healthcare services. My goal is to enhance patients’ involvement and optimize services based on the analysis of the data. My objective is to assume leadership positions, integrating my healthcare experience with technology to enhance patient care and health systems.
Nursing Home: It is crucial to have the ability to care for the residents (Wang et al., 2020). The job entails helping the elderly patients with basic personal needs such as washing, feeding, and dressing them while maintaining their dignity. Courses like QQI Level 5 in Care Skills and Care of the Older Person, which I have pursued, are relevant in such facilities. Interpersonal skills and empathy are also crucial since nursing homes require frequent communication with residents, their loved ones, and other care professionals. Perseverance and understanding are essential when dealing with the issues that elderly people encounter in the premises.
Hospital: Due to the nature of the working environment, hospitals are characterized by high activity and demand for fast decision-making, flexibility, and accurate execution of professional procedures (Thomas and Suresh, 2023). In this environment, my duties would entail taking vital signs, helping the patient with hygiene, and moving the patient around. Knowledge of medical equipment such as hoists and electronic beds is useful for hospital positions. Hospitals also require good organizational skills and knowledge of health and safety measures. Patient diversity is another important aspect because hospitals are associated with various diseases and conditions.
Home Care: It is a form of health care that entails attending to the needs of a patient within their home environment. This environment calls for autonomy and good time management since care assistants mostly operate under minimal supervision (Record et al., 2021). The QQI Level 5 certifications I have enable me to address the needs of patients in home care environments. It is crucial to maintain good relations with patients and their families in order to be able to address their needs fully. Another essential aspect is problem-solving skills that are useful when modifying care routines according to the patient’s changing needs. Patience and emotional stability are important since home care is often a long-term process and the caregiver is also responsible for the patient’s company.
Work Experience gives people practical exposure of the professional world where they can implement the theoretical knowledge in the practical field (Tomlinson and Jackson, 2021). It is used to build basic competencies, acquire sectoral knowledge, and learn about organizational realities. Through performing day to day activities, people gain confidence, develop communication skills and problem solving skills. The goal of work experience is to close the gap between theory and practice, development, and readiness for further employment.
My planned work placement is to be undertaken at St. James’s Hospital in Dublin, Ireland, one of the largest hospitals in the country. This hospital will enable me to gain diverse experience in patient care in different departments such as elderly care, rehabilitation, and chronic care. The hospital’s approach to the implementation of various disciplines also corresponds to my career goals of promoting the use of technology in healthcare services as well as improving my hands-on patient care skills. St. James’s Hospital will enable me to work with a variety of patients and see modern practices in the field of medicine.
The two main objectives I hope to accomplish during my placement are:
Advanced Patient Care: I wish to enhance my knowledge and understanding in the area of patient care to include the physical and psychological aspect of the patient. Employment in a large hospital setting will enable me to encounter various types of patients, which will enable me to adjust to the patient’s needs.
Leadership Development: My goal is to increase my involvement in the treatment of patients and interact with other members of the healthcare team. This will assist me in honing leadership and decision-making skills that will enable me to lead teams and implement effective healthcare solutions in future.
For work experience, I will apply different job search strategies that will help me secure a job within the healthcare field. My strategy will involve using search engines, job portals, and other healthcare-related websites, with a focus on identifying jobs that fit my skills and interests.
My principal approach will involve the use of online employment platforms like Indeed, Irish Jobs, and Glassdoor, where I will apply for healthcare assistant positions that align with my educational background and certifications, including QQI Level 5 in Care Skills and Care of the Older Person. These platforms will enable me to search for jobs based on location, skills, and experience, which will help me in finding suitable jobs for my level of training. I will also often use LinkedIn, which not only will assist me in searching for job vacancies but also allow me to communicate with other healthcare workers and recruiters.
I will regularly visit healthcare-related websites like Nursing Homes Ireland and the websites of individual nursing homes to search for job vacancies. These sources will give one direct link to the latest job advertisements like the one of Chevron Nursing Home Wexford. This way, the application will reach the intended candidates as soon as possible before the deadline. In addition, I will also read local newspapers and look at the community job boards, especially for positions in nursing homes and care facilities, which may not always be advertised online.
In the case of the job advertisement for a Healthcare Assistant at Chevron Nursing Home, I will apply for this opportunity by ensuring that I submit my application with the necessary qualifications and experience. A sample letter of my application is provided in the Appendix 1.
When doing the work experience interview, I will ensure that I dress appropriately and maintain a good posture (Kosyakova et al., 2022). As for the outfit, I will wear a black custom made suit, a white shirt and black shoes. This attire will show my adherence to detail and the respect I have for the interview process. It is important to make a good first impression and I plan to do so to increase my chances of being considered for the position.
While giving the interview, I will ensure that I do not fidget or twist my hands as this may be perceived as nervousness. Looking at the eyes will be appropriate but not excessive so that I can be able to interact well with the interviewer. My responses will be provided in a clear and confident manner while maintaining respect and consideration for the other party. I will ensure that I do not rush through my answers but instead take my time while at the same time ensuring that the answers are not too drawn out.
For the expected questions, I will prepare appropriate answers. In the interview, I will describe my communication skills, commitment to patients, and flexibility in the face of adversity (Sussman et al., 2021). In response to questions about my weaknesses, I intend to explain that I continue to work on my time management and the measures I have taken to improve it. Also, I will demonstrate how the QQI Level 5 certifications have prepared me to be a valuable member in a healthcare environment.
One of my strengths is punctuality and completing tasks within the set time, and I pride myself in this aspect. This reliability has enabled me to attend to several patients at once without compromising on the quality of care. Organizationally, I keep the patient files and the day’s work well-organized to ensure effective delivery of care. However, I plan on improving these skills by incorporating more of the technology such as task management software in order to reduce the chances of delays in administrative work.
In the healthcare industry, deadline management is very important because it determines the safety of patients and the quality of care they receive. On-time completion of tasks guarantees that patients receive the required treatments without delays, which may lead to adverse effects (Newman et al., 2021). Through the enhancement of time management and organization, I hope to enhance my efficiency even more, thereby benefiting the patients and the organization as a whole.
I am good at communication, especially when it comes to translating some medical concepts to the patients and their families. It also fosters trust and decreases patient stress, which enhances the overall effectiveness of care. Also, I am organized in teamwork; I work seamlessly with other healthcare professionals to provide comprehensive patient care. However, I need to enhance assertiveness during pressure, which I plan to do by attending assertiveness training that will help me to express my ideas more confidently.
In order to enhance my teamwork skills, I intend to take conflict management course since it will enable me to address issues affecting teams more politely. This will enhance coordination and cooperation among the team members and create a healthy working environment for the ultimate benefit of the patients. Building my interpersonal skills would help me foster a healthy work environment and encourage the sharing of ideas among employees.
I am capable of performing basic patient care tasks like washing, dressing, and feeding the patients while maintaining their dignity and comfort. Since the management of my hygiene and personal needs is an essential factor in preventing infections and enhancing my health, this is an essential need for me. Furthermore, I have good communication and interpersonal skills, which are important in dealing with patients who may have mobility issues or any other complications.
In order to enhance these skills, I will enroll in workshops that deal with more complex patients, for example, patients with special diets or patients with extreme physical disabilities.
Patient care skills are crucial in health care since they determine the safety, comfort, and healing of the patients (Cui et al., 2021). Besides, the care routines do not only eliminate the risk of developing complications such as infections or bedsores but also contribute to the patient’s wellbeing, both physically and emotionally. Acquiring these skills is important in order to provide quality care.
I am capable of operating hoists, electronic beds, and simple healthcare software to reduce the risk of injury and promote proper positioning of patients. I have been acquainted with these tools and have been able to offer comfortable and efficient care especially to patients with mobility restrictions or those who have just undergone surgery. Nevertheless, I understand that the development of healthcare technology is progressing at a fast pace and would like to enhance my skills by attending training sessions concerning the new healthcare instruments and the management of patient data in digital environments.
Technological competence is crucial in healthcare since it promotes the proper usage of tools, enhances patient care quality, and minimizes the likelihood of harm to patients and healthcare providers (Awad et al., 2021). Technology also helps in accurate patient data management which leads to better co-ordination and faster decisions. This way, I will be equipped with the necessary knowledge on the advanced equipment and systems that are required in today’s healthcare setting, which will enhance the quality of patient care as well as the efficiency of the health care delivery system.
Employees are entitled to receive a written statement of certain key employment details within five days of starting work, which includes pay, working hours and the job title. Employment rights are protected by the National Minimum Wage Act which guarantees a minimum wage of €12.70 per hour for employees, although this may differ for certain categories such as apprentices (Redmond, 2020).
Employees also have the right to paid holidays, with four weeks of annual leave for full-time employees and public holidays.
According to the Safety, Health, and Welfare at Work Act 2005, Employers must ensure that the workplace is safe and healthy for employees. This entails carrying out risk audits and availing the appropriate training to avert mishaps (McGann et al., 2020). GDPR also has provisions that employers should adhere to in as much as they are handling personal data of their employees.
Also, employers must recognize and allow union formation and collective bargaining by employees without discriminating against those who seek to form a union. Pay and working hours have been a contentious issue in the current global political climate, with legislation being enacted to try and regulate them.
The Working Time Act regulates the maximum working time to 48 hours per week and guarantees rest periods during the day and the week. Another important regulation is that the employees should be allowed to take breaks during their shifts. Employers are obliged to issue payslips that show wages and deductions made.
Employees have the right to form unions and bargain collectively. The Unfair Dismissals Acts claim that dismissals that are associated with union activity are automatically unfair and thus give protection at the workplace.
The Employment Equality Acts 1998–2015 and the Equal Status Acts 2000–2018 are the main pieces of legislation that offer protection against discrimination in Ireland.
The Employment Equality Acts make discrimination at the workplace unlawful on nine grounds of which are gender, age, race, disability, family status, and being a member of the traveller community (Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission, no date). The acts are on aspects like recruitment, promotions, training, and dismissal. Both direct discrimination, where one worker is treated worse than another, and indirect discrimination, where a policy is set in place and negatively affects a particular group, are unlawful.
Employers also have the responsibility to make reasonable accommodation to the disabled employee to enable them to access employment opportunities.
Furthermore, The Equal Status Acts protects against discrimination in relation to goods and services, including health services (Workplace Relations Commission, no date). These laws seek to prevent people from being discriminated against when accessing services in relation to the nine categories and permits affirmative action for the advancement of people with the disadvantaged category.
The Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 outlines the duties of employers and employees in relation to the safety of working environment. Healthcare employers are obliged to assess risks, train employees on safety, and guarantee measures like PPE to safeguard employees and patients from risks (McGann et al., 2020). This is especially so in the health sector where employees are likely to get injured or exposed to diseases and infections.
Health and safety measures include controlling infection, handling of medical equipment, and prevention of musculoskeletal injuries through ergonomic working conditions. Employers must also ensure that healthcare workers are offered support for mental health and stress since they are exposed to so much stress both physically and emotionally.
The laws that regulate protection of data are the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the Data Protection Act 2018. These laws are meant to safeguard the private and identifiable information of people, not only the patients but also the healthcare providers (Hansen et al., 2021). In healthcare, this is important because personal information such as medical records and health information must be protected.
Healthcare providers are the data controllers, which means that they are the ones who decide the purpose and manner of processing the personal data. They should make sure that the data is processed legally, with the subject’s knowledge and consent, and for a legitimate reason which can be for the provision of healthcare or health research. Providers must also ensure that their security measures are sufficient to prevent unauthorized access, breaches or accidental loss of data. In most cases, the patient’s consent is necessary for the processing of health data, but there are legal exemptions, such as public health interests.
Furthermore, personal data of the healthcare workers including their employment records must also be protected. According to
GDPR, the data subjects are entitled to rights of access, right of rectification, and right to erasure. Failure to respect these rights attracts severe consequences to the healthcare organizations. Thus, it is incumbent upon healthcare institutions to implement stringent data protection measures and engage in periodic assessments to check compliance.
The Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) was set up under the Health Act 2007 to regulate the quality and safety of the Irish health and social care services (McGrath et al., 2022). HIQA is responsible for the setting and regulation of national health care standards in areas such as hospitals, residential care facilities, and disability services. Its goal is to promote the quality of care that is safe and focused on the individual.
HIQA’s standards are aimed at several important aspects, such as infection prevention and control, patient’s rights, and risk assessment (Craig, 2021). To be compliant, these standards have to be followed, and this means that healthcare providers are subjected to routine inspections, which can be random. These inspections assist in determining where changes are needed, with feedback being used to modify policies.
Another important domain that HIQA focuses on is the safety of patients. For example, HIQA requires hospitals to have strict infection control measures, which were significant during the COVID-19 outbreak. These standards also focus on the accountability and disclosure of information with regard to the constant enhancement of the services offered by healthcare providers (Craig, 2021). HIQA advocates for the patient’s perspective in their care with the ultimate goal of improving the safety and fairness of healthcare in Ireland.
While on my work placement, I was able to get constructive feedback from my supervisor. On the positive side, they commended my time management and punctuality, pointing out that I was very strict with patient care timetables and did not require prodding to prioritize tasks. They also appreciated my interpersonal communication as I was able to relay information to both patients and other staff. The self-assessed strengths included the ability to describe comprehensive procedures in a clear and sensitive manner, which reassures patients and fosters teamwork and collaboration.
Nonetheless, the feedback also contained some positive notes. My supervisor noted that, although I demonstrated proficiency in following protocols and procedures, I could improve in decision-making, especially when it comes to making changes to care plans in response to the client’s needs and preferences. They supported me to be more assertive especially when it comes to managing dynamic patient care and they told me to go ahead and follow my gut instinct without having to wait for instructions.
I accepted the feedback with a positive attitude because I knew that it could help me improve my performance at work. While it was not easy to be told that I should work on the aspect of problem-solving in the pressure, I appreciated the chance to grow. I responded to the suggestions by offering to take on more challenging cases, consulting with others when needed, and gradually assuming more decision-making responsibility. Consequently, I became more confident in my ability to effectively manage challenging patient situations and felt more empowered to address them independently.
One major concern was observed when a family member of the patient was angry regarding a particular care intervention. It led to tension and breakdown of communication between the care team and the family due to their frustration. To this, I had to take the proactive role of listening actively, acknowledging their concerns, and elaborating on the treatment plan. In the end, we had a very polite discussion and came to a consensus on the proper course of action for the patient. Contemplating about this, I can identify that it would be better to involve a senior team member earlier to get more help and solve the conflict faster.
Another issue was time management, particularly when several tasks demanded attention during a specific time or within the first few days of the week. While it was a challenge to maintain punctuality at times, I was able to prioritize tasks and make a schedule that would assign time slots for important activities. This was useful and in the future, I will use digital time management tools which will enhance my organization and efficiency.
It was also difficult to meet the Activity of Daily Living (ADL) deadlines especially due to the many patients requiring attention. To deal with this pressure, I consulted with my seniors who advised me to subdivide tasks into doable portions. I also learned the importance of delegation which helped me to reduce my workload to a large extent. In the future, I would continue to look for a mentor but also set more realistic expectations in terms of the amount of time that would be required to accomplish a particular task.
Adherence to health and safety measures was crucial, but challenging, especially in situations where time was of the essence. At first, I struggled to adhere to each regulation strictly without a single deviation, but I learned how valuable training sessions were. By reviewing such measures and enforcing them frequently, I made these safety measures part of my habits. In the future, I would ensure I take refresher courses in order to ensure safety standards for myself and the patients are well observed.
I was able to acquire a lot of new knowledge during my work placement, which added to the theoretical knowledge I had acquired in the class. Perhaps one of the most important areas of development was the assimilation of knowledge on how to treat patients with complex medical needs, patients with what are essentially terminal illnesses, or patients with conditions like Alzheimer’s or similar diseases.
My academic studies gave me a general idea of what healthcare was like, but it was the clinical work, including adapting care plans and learning how to use specific skills such as handling complicated feeding schedules, that made me more knowledgeable. This practical experience allowed me to develop flexibility to approach each patient individually that classroom scenarios could not mimic.
I also enhanced my knowledge of patient relations and how to approach them especially when addressing sensitive issues. In both cases, whether I was outlining a procedure or calming worried family members, I was able to learn how to approach these situations with more subtlety and understanding that I had not possessed before. This placement enabled me to put these skills into practice and transform conceptual knowledge into practical communication solutions for various situations.
In order to improve myself, I have listed several strategies. The first is to pursue my clinical education in workshops and CPD courses that are centered on enhanced patient care. This will enable me to acquire more specialized skills. Furthermore, I will focus on the development of my organizational skills through the use of technology that will assist in the organization of my work and the patient’s care.
I also plan to ask for more guidance from senior staff members. I believe their knowledge will be useful in guiding me through intricate care scenarios and improving my decision-making skills.
Thus, by implementing these strategies, I can further develop the key lessons obtained during the placement and progress in my professional growth.
The work placement was even more enriching than I had initially anticipated. At first, I expected to be exposed to practical work mainly in basic patient care, but the position challenged me to grow. I was able to manage difficult patients like those who had severe physical disabilities and those with impaired brain function, which was challenging. This went far beyond the basic exposure I had imagined, expanding my knowledge on how to adjust care plans for a particular patient in the actual setting.
Furthermore, I anticipated that my work would primarily involve adherence to routine protocols. However, I was given tasks that enabled me to be more involved, for instance, in handling the complex feeding procedures and family meetings. These experiences were not only beneficial in the clinical aspect but also in the aspect of empathy and interpersonal communication skills. The variability and the uncertainty of the position, however, enriched and complicated the experience more than I expected, offering valuable personal and career development.
I have learnt that my flexibility and quick-thinking skills are much better developed than I realized. At the beginning, I thought I was strong in managing time and routine care but my placement showed me that I am best suited for unpredictable circumstances. For instance, I was often expected to attend to patients with multiple ailments, most of the time without prior exposure to such cases. This experience proved that I am able to adapt to new techniques and implement them effectively in a short time when under pressure.
Moreover, I have discovered that I am more effective in communication, especially in conflict-solving processes, than I used to believe. In responding to patients’ concerns or in discussing uncomfortable topics with their families, I could always stay composed and focused, while being sensitive to their feelings and logical in my answers. This has made me rethink my career plans because I now understand that perhaps leadership positions which involve a lot of interpersonal skills may be more suitable for me than what I initially thought.
In the light of my initial self-assessment, I have been able to have a much clearer perception of my strengths and the direction I want to take in future. Through my work placement, I have realized that I possess is the ability to work under pressure and make decisions on the spot especially when handling patients with complicating factors. This has changed my career path to focus on positions that require more decision-making and supervising of a team. Managing complex patient scenarios made me realize that I could perform well in more challenging roles, including a care coordinator or clinical supervisor.
Relating these experiences to my future career goals, I am now thinking of further education programs. I think that Postgraduate Diploma in Healthcare Management or even a Master’s in Nursing would provide necessary tools to achieve success in leadership positions. These programs would not only enhance my clinical skills but also give me an understanding of how health care systems function and patient care approaches. Ireland has a few such programs, and some international courses also attract me.
Regarding advancement, the current skills along with the further education would allow to advance within the healthcare industry and possibly transition to a specific area of focus, such as palliative care or geriatrics. These areas are in sync with my increasing passion to care for patients with special needs, which was evident during my placement.
With regard to the financial aspect of further education, I think it is a worthwhile investment that will help to open the door to higher-paid positions. This is why I am considering other options such as scholarships, part-time study options, or employer-sponsored programs to make further education more possible while still holding the position.
Lastly, the employment prospects in Ireland are excellent as there are numerous positions in both public and private healthcare sectors, but I am also seeking positions internationally. Canada and the UK have a growing healthcare industry and a need for qualified personnel to fill in the available positions. If I acquire the additional qualifications, I think that I will be ready to seize the local and international opportunities in my career path, which will allow me to create an interesting and meaningful life.
