LEADERSHIP FOR GLOBAL HOSPITALITY

1. Background Information on the Leaders

Regarding leadership, Sarah Thompson, the Ops Manager at ABC Hospitality Group and James Rodriguez, a Team Leader in the sales department at XYZ Tech Solutions stand out as a representation of good leadership anew and traditional leadership respectively.

Sarah's worked in the ABC Hospitality Group – an internationally renowned hospitality organisation – that serves as a source of professional training. In case of James' management job, he was hired by the XYZ Tech Solutions – a technology industry leader – and took up the role of leading his team within the company.

Sarah is the one in charge of a diverse group of 50 people within the ABC hospitality group, while the James is the one involved with the intricacies of sales persons’ team of 15 representatives of XYZ tech solutions.

The leadership style of Sarah is in line with Transformational Leadership discuss extensively under the Bass Model proposed by Bass (2018). This model centres on inspiring and motivating followers, fostering a sense of shared vision and a commitment to organizational objectives.

James is the one to mirror the Hersey and Blanchard's leadership theory known as Situational Leadership theory while Francine is the one to be opposed to it (Henkel & Bourdeau, 2018). The cycle of dealing with any team is focused on adaptive leadership, which is changing the strategies according to the maturity level of the team.

The Dubrin’s (2022) Theory is one of the major additions to the leaders' portfolio which introduces different styles of leadership and Sarah and James also implement it while leading their respective teams. The theory articulated by Dubrin (2022) demonstrates that leadership carries many facets, among which the ability to form a bond with other people, to empathize and show integrity are of great significance to leadership success.

This theory posited that the main traits of characteristics of leadership can classified into three major categories – personality trains, motives, and cognitive factors.

In addition, Walker and Aritz (2014) brings a refreshing perspective in Discursive Leadership Approach presented in their work. This thesis suggests that leadership being the means of communication with an individual is dependent on the language.

In the opinion of Walker and Aritz (2014), leadership could only be said to exist as trends of thoughts that are formed through selective discourse and adopted by others as potential solution to meaningful tasks or conditions. The principle recommends going away from old vertical leadership models to new and more interactive and communicative ways.

In regard with Sarah's lead role in the ABC Hospitality Group, there is a clear emphasis that is placed on open communication with the team and the incorporation of different aspects of the group in the decision making. Sarah uses a communicative style that is dynamic and encourages creativity and good working relationships among team members and co-workers, a point of departure from the authoritarian approach of my initial leadership.

Professionally, James is also an advocate of communication-based style of leadership. He is able to open up channels in his sales team so that he can be able to address members concerns before they become big. It is in agreement with the Discursive approach to a certain extent, as he knows how to use strategic communication in building up the common objectives of the team.

2. Ethical leadership demonstrated by the leaders

Sarah Thompson alongside James Rodriguez are ethical and charismatic leadership examples that bring positive outcomes in the field they work in. Sarah, who is the Operations Manager, incorporates the following of the Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 12 by ABC Hospitality Group. The wastage preventive approach proposed by to manage operations in the workplace is a representation of how ideas while towards the betterment of the sustainability goals.

In the working environment of James, in his role as team leader at XYZ Tech Solutions, stresses ethical sales practices at his place. The specified strategy is in line with number 8 of SDGs (Decent Work and Economic Growth) and 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure) because it elegantly follows the fair and transparent rules. With the help of equal opportunity and communication, James is one of the key players that help the economic development of society and thus create a socially responsible leadership (Knights, 2022).

The keystone for his team's operation process that is based on ethical platform is its adherence to ethical principles, which in turn produces the underlying components of honesty and integrity.

Dhiman and Marque (2022) have emphasized the source of the lasting role of sustainable leadership in the post-pandemic world. The authors state that quiet ego type of leader bonds with others through empathy that eventually leads to gaining respect, trust, openness and creativity (Dhiman and Marques, 2022). Both Sarah and James, among whom one is a manager and the other is a team leader are fond of caring and resoluteness which are both relevant.

At ABC Hospitality Group, Sarah Thompson has set herself apart with her complex character and capabilities as a team leader, among other qualities. Her empathy comes at the forefront of her personality, and this develops awareness of her team members in her leadership, as a team of 50 individuals with diverse backgrounds and cultures.

She, therefore, creates a comfortable and understanding work environment. Furthermore, strategies of Sarah let her to deal with the intricacies of the hospitality industry, keeping ABC Hospitality Group on track and operating at peak levels. Further, her great communicational skills as Walker and Aritz underline in their approach to the Discursive Leadership, help her to talk on her ideas well even within her team, fitting in to the leaders' view that communication is more important than anything else (Walker & Aritz, 2014).

James’ skill of sharing with others the load and simultaneously letting his teammates develop as leaders is certainly one of his empowering abilities. James has a multifaceted negotiation background, a big advantage in sales – he can effectively handle all challenges and the most complex business dealings. Moreover, his attitude and his way of communicating generate an atmosphere of state liaison and this is part of the interpersonal skills analysed in leadership communication theory and practice (Wolff Lundholt & Uldall, 2019).

Personality Traits

Hence, Sarah's leadership is proved to be open-minded in accepting of different opinions for the ABC Hospitality Group. A culture of creative problem-solving and responsiveness is critical to the high-speed dynamics of the industry, and this quality equally matters. Contrastingly, James has opposite feelings of being apprehensive and doubtful he tends to be easy going and optimistic which makes XYZ Tech Solutions a very happy place to work in. The personality traits that make up the Quiet Ego Leadership model put such an emphasis on emotional and trust expression as means of communication (Dhiman & Marques, 2022).

Task-based Personality Traits

Taking a detailed-oriented approach, Sarah's task-oriented style involves the efficient completion of tasks. Hence, attention to smallest detail is a key character trait that makes it possible to provide healthcare management with necessary accuracy and precision. Contrarily, James is motivated to meet goals and assign certain tasks one after another which makes the team productive and XYZ Tech Solutions heading towards the targets.

4. Motives

In reference to leadership motives, Sarah Thompson and James Rodriguez, as a leader, exhibit entirely varying leading factors that stimulate them to emulate the ideal leadership. Sarah, in the function of ABC Hospitality Group’s Operations Manager, believes the use of the sustainable corporate strategy lies in the idea of "equity and sustainability" of the hospitality industry.

This goes along with current leadership notion, that argues that success extends far beyond businesses alone and leaders do play an important role in the overall well-being of society and the environment (Walker & Aritz, 2014; Dhiman & Marques, 2022).

On the other hand, James exhibits the strength of character stemming from tenacity, grit and determination. So, this tells that in leadership it is really important to keep going when facing the struggles that come across during the changing tech environment (Ruben and Gigliotti, 2019).

James's motives are often determined by the situation and depending on the circumstances he modifies his leadership style. Therefore, his model of leadership in this discussion resembles the Quiet Ego Leadership approach (Dhiman & Marques, 2022).

5. Cognitive Factors

Cognitive factors tend to be the key factors which create the distinctive leadership styles of James Rodriguez and Sarah Thompson by imbuing them with different objectives and problem-solving techniques. Sarah, the Operations Manager of the ABC Hospitality Group, takes more of the type of thinking which is analytical approach.

Her cognitive provides a clear vision enabling her to analyse deep and strategic problems related to dealing with the organizational, within which her communication principles of leadership should be based in line with (Ruben & Gigliotti, 2019).

In contrast, however, James Rodriguez, has the belief in promoting among his team members open, brainstorming thinking. This act of cognitive attention coincides with the proposition of resonance, activation, and cultivation which is specifically mentioned as a theory by Ruben and Gigliotti (10`9), underling the need for various messaging platforms, diverse perspectives, and differentiated responses within a leadership framework (Ruben & Gigliotti, 2019).

6. Attitudes and behaviours

Sarah’s result-oriented approach sparks the discourse on the leadership communication and the social influence, where the message’s resonant and effectiveness is given more significance to advance the tasks and the problems (Ruben B & Gigliotti 2019). Sarah shows a high degree of task-orientation just as this concept is described in leadership communication theory (Wolff Lundholt & Uldall, 2019) emphasizing the importance of being a person with purposeful vision through their work.

James’ demonstration of tenacious and resilient personality is bringing into being the proactive approach, those are playing a path-seeking role in the process of solving problems (Ruben & Gigliotti, 2019). James without doubt fits the background of the recommended situational leadership, which includes the adaptation of the leadership style consistent with the situation (Smith et al., 2018).

7. Conclusion

The learning of skills such as leadership, teamwork, inter-person or EQ are just some of the ways Sarah makes the company environment better for the team members. This confirms the Quiet Ego theory of leadership where one has to use empathy in their communication in order to maintain a relationship founded on trust (Dhiman and Marques, 2022). James as a leader underlines the importance of teamwork and collaborative activities among his people. He is at the fore front of these two spaces (teamwork and collaborative acitivities) that are according to leadership communication theory by Wolff Lundholt and Uldall (2019).
